Chunk
Explorer

Real French isn't built word by word. It runs on chunks: patterns you hear again and again with different words slotted in. These are the most common patterns from hours of real French conversation. Tap any pattern, then pick a filler to complete it.

How this works

These patterns come from hours of real French conversation: podcasts, interviews, and everyday chat. Not textbooks, not grammar exercises, just the way French people actually speak.

A simple algorithm scans all that conversation looking for sentence fragments that keep recurring with different words slotted in. For example, "je pense que" appears hundreds of times, followed by dozens of different words. That makes it a productive pattern: a structure you can reuse with whatever you want to say next.

The patterns are ranked by how many different words fill the gap (more variety = more useful) and by how evenly they appear across different conversations (not just one topic). The result is a shortlist of the sentence building blocks that native speakers reach for without thinking, and that give you the biggest head start as a learner.

Frozen chunks (at the bottom) are the opposite: fixed phrases where nothing varies. You learn these as whole pieces, like vocabulary.

Productive Patterns

These patterns have a variable slot. The more words that fill it, the more useful the pattern is for you. Filter by starting word to explore.

No patterns match this filter.

Frozen Chunks

These don't have a variable slot. They're fixed expressions worth learning as whole pieces: you'll hear them constantly in conversation.

Patterns are a start. Using them is the thing.

Knowing the chunks is step one. Speaking them with confidence takes practice. Book a free call and find out how lessons work.
